Book Presentation: Feeding on Light with Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky

On Saturday 7 October at 7pm, artist Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky will present her new publication  “Feeding on Light” (Roma Publications) at Zabriskie.

On this evening, Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky will be joined by the authors Sina Ribak and Taco Hidde Bakker, and designer Dongyoung Lee.

“Feeding on Light” examines photosynthesis through experimental photography and is laid out as a field guide. Imagine a collection of perforated leaves in which organisms like insects, fungi, or bacteria living in or eating the foliage have created an array of patterns. Transporting the outdoors into her analogue colour darkroom, Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky experimentally captured the traces of the often symbiotic tree-insect-sun relationships. An extensive index links the 136 photograms, 87 contact prints and 496 leaf negative prints to the plant species’ common and scientific names.

Essays by Margot & Roland Spohn, Sina Ribak and Taco Hidde Bakker contextualise her light harvest record from the perspectives of biology, ecology and philosophy. Design: Dongyoung Lee, Roger Willems.

Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky is an artist based in Berlin. Research and study play a vital role for Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky. Since summer 2017 Kovacovsky co-organizes the monthly reading club ‘Between Us and Nature – A Reading Club’ together with Sina Ribak. They read texts related to natural sciences, art, anthropology, postcolonialism, and (post)anthropocene, chosen from a female perspective looking beyond disciplines. Coming from a background in photography, Kovacovsky works on the peripheries of the photographic medium and experiments with ways in which photographs stay unique. In nature, where two plants of the same species are never identical, the unique is a fundamental notion. The artist is fascinated by the characteristics of beings that only exist once.
