All of the plants in this garden are cultivars registered with names commemorating battles and other military events, for example, Peony ‘Victoire de la Marne’, Polyantha Rose ‘Dunkerque’, Floribunda Rose ‘Atombombe’. They were bred by various rosieres and nurseries in Europe over the last few centuries, each one given a name signifying an act of organised violence.The Garden has been growing in the community gardens of the former (once military and civilian) airport Tempelhofer Feld, Berlin, since 2014, cared for by myself and the community gardeners. The plants growing here represent only a selection of a longer list of cultivar species named after battles, an non-exhaustive incomplete living (and dying) archive."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/8951/5850/files/zabriskie_Battlefield-newedition_01.jpg?v=1715777125
a-witch-recipe-for-grievers
Efemmera Reissue #5 - A Witch Recipe for Grievers

"Sometimes nothing can be done to change things, and hurt and anger must be transmuted . . ."

This essay was originally published in 1984 as the last recipe in a Bloodroot Collective feminist vegetarian cookbook (see Our daily lives have to be a satisfaction in themselves which includes this essay as a chapter).

This new version is completely redesigned as a ritual object to be given to a friend in mourning. It is a critical celebration of the oral tradition of runosong, a style of singing which has been practiced for centuries by Baltic Finnic peoples on the land now called Estonia and elsewhere. By drawing upon the wealth of alternative vocal and somatic practices embedded in runosong, the compiled texts enact a fugitive search for historical consciousness. Working against the grain of Estonian nationalism and its Eurocentric tendencies, this involves mapping and resisting the ways in which divergent bodies, selves, and forms of physical sociality have been disciplined through the interplay of brutality and privilege inherent to modernization. The book is a provocation, but one born out of love and a sense of obligation to the ancestors.
