McGinley’s colourful and vivid photographs capture the zeitgeist of a generation like no other. Celebrating the sweet and fleeting state of youth, his images are suffused with colour, light and energy. Naked kids climbing trees, running through the desert, rolling down hills, suspended in the air, diving into lakes, leaping through fireworks – there’s a lightness and carelessness and beauty to McGinley’s images that is utterly addictive. His powerful depictions of youth in the here and now are a raw and personal declaration of love to life with all its highs and lows.\r\rThe photographer was the youngest artist to exhibit at the prestigious Whitney Museum in New York and has been enjoying a stellar career, equally successful in the world of fine arts as with his commercial work that has won numerous awards.\r\rIn a refreshingly frank and honest conversation, Ryan McGinley talked with mono.kultur about his first 10 years of an astonishing career, his memories of the late Dash Snow and why every day is an adventure.\r\r
\r
\r\rInterview by Martina Kix\rIntroduction by Kai von Rabenau\rPhotography by Ryan McGinley\rDesign by Eva Gonçalves and Kai von Rabenau\r\r
\r\r\r\r\r\r
\r\r\r\r \r\r

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/8951/5850/products/zabriskie_monokultur_ryan_mc_kingley-1.jpg?v=1679342506
mono-kultur-38-gus-van-sant
mono.kultur #38 - Gus van Sant

IN LIMBO\r“I’m not actually involved, but I’m observing.”
\rIn 1991, River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves, portraying two street prostitutes in ‘My Own Private Idaho’, took us on a trip to the dark side of the USA – a seedy, disturbing and vulnerable place entirely at odds with the great American Dream. It also launched one of Hollywood’s most unusual and distinct cinematic careers with Gus van Sant.\r\rSince then, oscillating between classic Hollywood productions like ‘Good Will Hunting’ or ‘Milk’, and highly experimental, challenging art house movies such as ‘Drugstore Cowboy’, ‘Elephant’ or ‘Last Days’, Gus van Sant is one of the very few directors to work within and without Hollywood with remarkable ease and credibility, shaping a strangely addictive and consistently courageous filmography.\r\rIf anything, it is a recurring affinity for the fragile and excluded – addicts, hustlers, politicians, rock stars – and for youth, at that breaking point where innocence ends, that unites van Sant’s vast and diverse body of work.\r\rGus van Sant offers us a profoundly humane view of the world. It is a cinema defined by tenderness and slowness, preferring to observe rather than manipulate. A cinema of gaps and open endings, where mood reigns over meaning, where what we see and hear doesn’t quite add up, leaving us wondering.\r\rIn a suitably meandering interview with mono.kultur, Gus van Sant talked about his second chance as a director, inventing films on the spot and why Hollywood always wins.\r\rVisually, the issue is heavily influenced by Gus van Sant’s quiet cinematic style, submitting itself to an endless horizon of American landscapes, leaving ample space to words, skies, and the occasional figure drifting into sight.\r\rInterview by Anna Saulwick\rIntroduction by Kai von Rabenau\rFilm Stills by Gus van Sant\rDesign by Linda Riedl\r\r \r\r
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/8951/5850/products/zabriskie_monokultur_gus_van_sant-1.jpg?v=1679342512
mono-kultur-39-terre-thaemlitz
mono.kultur #39 - Terre Thaemlitz

\r
THE ARROGANCE OF OPTIMISM\r“I have more to say about the workings of division than of community.”
\r
\r
\r\rPolitics and the dance floor make for uneasy bedfellows, and it is this uneasiness that drives most of the work of Terre Thaemlitz, confronting head-on issues that are usually off limits in electronic music. Thaemlitz is a producer and DJ, also known under his monikers of DJ Sprinkles, Social Material, and K-S.H.E, among others. But she is also a writer, educator and activist of sorts, with very fluid notions of gender, switching continuously between male and female drag.\r\rBorn in 1968, Terre Thaemlitz left the rigidly conservative and violently homophobic environment of his home state, Missouri, in the mid-1980s for New York. She became involved in the queer and transgender scenes both socially and musically at a time when house music was not a genre but simply the wide open sound of a specific social and political space. As New York’s underground queer music scenes dissolved under gentrification, Thaemlitz eventually relocated to Tokyo at the beginning of the ’00s.\r\rToday, Terre Thaemlitz is a reference point not only within the confines of electronic music, but particularly for transgendered communities. The fragility of identity – sexual and otherwise – in relation to the larger world is a central theme for Thaemlitz, tirelessly dissecting the boundaries and friction between public and private, between minority and mainstream with a brutal sharpness and criticality that are often somewhat irritating, continuously questioning and exposing political and social systems and the violence they generate.\r\rIn a challenging interview with mono.kultur, Terre Thaemlitz talked about the politics of sexuality, his disillusion with the music industry, and why roller disco was so amazing.\r\rVisually, the issue is a dark affair, steeped in a dirty, gritty black. Printed on no less than six different paper stocks and juxtaposing several grids and graphic systems, it creates its own visual logic – only to disturb our most fundamental habits of reading and navigating a magazine by opening backwards, from right to left.\r\rInterview by Melissa Canbaz\rArtwork by Terre Thaemlitz\rDesign by Kai von Rabenau/mono.studio\r\r
\r

\r

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/8951/5850/products/zabriskie_monokultur_terre_thaemlitz-1.jpg?v=1679342518
berliner-hefte-zu-geschichte-und-gegenwart-der-stadt-2-die-legende-vom-sozialen-wohnungsbau-zur-zeit-nicht-erhaltlich
She began experimenting with writing music as a child and later took composing courses during her undergraduate studies in linguistics at New York University.\r\rIt is also in New York where she soon established her own place within the art and music scenes, as comfortable producing music in her own name as she is conceiving art installations as a member of the artist collective GCC or providing sound to the fashion shows of labels such as Telfar and Hood by Air.\r\rBut regardless of the genre or medium, almost all of Al Qadiri’s work is defined by the thematic undercurrents that run throughout her records, installations, and collaborations, dealing with cultural stereotypes, notions of place and displacement, regional and global politics, and concepts of national but also gender and sexual identity.\r\rHer interest in semiotics and how language determines our way of thinking has remained a lasting concern that Al Qadiri has also applied to the language of her music and art practice. The distinct aesthetics of her record covers and PR images often tap into the hyperreal, evoking corporate and cultural visual codes. It extends all the way to Al Qadiri’s highly stylised appearance, embodying an almost sleek aloofness.\r\rIn a way, Fatima Al Qadiri seems more interested in creating a sonic and visual space for thought and reflection, in filling the silence, proposing a shift of perspective rather than, as is so often the case with music, an emotional escape. Hers is a sound very much of the here and now, channeling not only a multi-layered past, but a complicated present, processing a flux of input and information. Sound as a filtered reality, a kind of digital compression of personal obsessions and contemporary concerns.\r\r
\r
\r\rInterview by Daniel Berndt\rWorks by Fatima Al Qadiri\rDesign by Fuchs Borst\r\r \r\r

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/8951/5850/products/zabriskie_mono_kultur_fatima_al_qadiri-1.jpg?v=1679343943
berliner-hefte-zu-geschichte-und-gegenwart-der-stadt-6-zingster-strasse-25
Dedicated to Frank Wagner, Independent Curator (1958–2016).\r\rDavid Wojnarowicz (1954–1992) came into prominence in the East Village art world of the 1980s, actively embracing all media and forging an expansive range of work both fiercely political and highly personal. Although largely self-taught, he worked as an artist and writer to merge a sophisticated combination of found and discarded material with an uncanny understanding of literary influences. First displayed in rough storefront galleries, his work already gained national prominence at the very moment. Diagnosed with HIV in the late 1980s his work became resolutely and fervently political at a time where the AIDS epidemic was cutting down a generation of artists. From the late 1970s until his death in 1992, Wojnarowicz produced a body of work that was as conceptually rigorous as it was stylistically diverse.\r\rThe issue departs from Wojnarowicz’s grief at the loss of loved ones during the 1980s AIDS crisis, and anger at the US government for their willful neglect of this loss. The issue assembles a chorus of various gendered and sexual positions, all seeking support, love and intimacy in linguistic, architectural and bodily structures, all the while under threat of collapse. These voices are threaded together with excerpts from Julia Kristeva’s white, feminist, psychoanalytical, semiotic Black Sun. Depression and Melancholia (1992).\r\rF.R.DAVID is co-published by uh books and KW Institute for Contemporary Art.\r\r
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/8951/5850/products/zabriskie_fr_srping_black_sun-1-Kopie.jpg?v=1679347239
mono-kultur-46-francis-kere
mono.kultur #46 - Francis Kéré
In our most colourful issue yet, we step into the life and work of architect Francis Kéré, known in equal measure for his lighthearted and innovative architecture, his remarkable background, and his infectious sense of optimism.\r\rAnd his path is an extraordinary one: beginning in Gando, a small village in Burkina Faso, and moving all the way to West Berlin in the 1980s, where Kéré would end up studying architecture. His graduation project was the school Gando never had – built in 2001 with the help of the people it was designed for, the village community. It was also the starting point for his own practice that celebrates architecture as a fundamentally social act.\r\rSince then, Kéré has completed numerous projects both in Africa and beyond, including schools, medical centres, cultural institutions, and temporary installations, such as the renowned annual Serpentine Pavilion in 2017. Frequently relying on local materials and infrastructure, his work is marked by a profound simplicity and refreshing lightness, meeting technical problems with surprising and seemingly effortless solutions. It reflects his attitude that architecture should, in its most primary function, seek to improve the lives of the people who inhabit it.\r\rWith mono.kultur, Francis Kéré talked about his long trajectory from a remote village in Africa to Berlin, his steadfast belief in optimism, and what makes a tree a perfect piece of architecture.\r\rDesignwise, we followed Kéré’s principle to work with what is at hand, sourcing papers from dead stock at our printers’, essentially using an assortment of leftovers. And colour, of course, with the issue based on the national colours of Burkina Faso, paying tribute to the idea of culture as a shared ground to build upon.\r\r

Examining physical, geographical, digital, political and emotional contexts, KRZAK PAPIER issue 1 explores a broad range of meanings behind WASTE - from unwanted matter to lost time. The publication is entirely in English with international contributions in form of articles as well as art and design projects.\r
\r
\r
\r

\r
\r
\r
\r
\r
\r
\r\rProject oriented on sharing reflections and possible directions for sustainable present/future. Rough story or nice story?” A collaboration between author Will Ashon and Michal Novosad, Rafal’s Saga presents a tale of homeless life in London: the difficulties, the despair, the endless problems, but also the humanity and humour and, most of all, the heartbreaking beauty of being alive. As William Morris pointed out, the most grinding poverty is a trifling evil compared with the inequality of classes and this inequality of class is crystallised in the decisions we make when we see someone begging. Michal tells the story of the death of his friend, Rafal, and in doing so forces us to confront what it means if and when we calculate whether someone is worthy of receiving our small change.\r\r
The Sacrifice Issue contains, among other things, stone circles, crop sacrifices, folk magic, bog bodies, Medieval dooms, lost hearts, re-enchantment, and Ronald Hutton on folk horror.\r\rHellebore is a collection of writings and essays devoted to British folk horror and the themes that inspire it: folklore, myth, history, archaeology, psychogeography, witches, and the occult.\r\rHellebore is a poisonous plant that has the power of altering perception, and it's thought to be one of the main ingredients for the witches' flying ointment. In an area where many Bedouin villages are illegalised, and routinely destroyed to make way for Jewish settlements, it is no small conclusion.\r\rThis makeshift satellite is just one of the many inventions from the group Forensic Architecture, a research agency based at Goldsmiths, University of London. Made up of architects, lawyers, journalists, scientists, and more, it is far from a conventional architectural practice; instead investigating human rights and environmental violations where the truth appears to have been distorted or covered up. In 10 years of work, they have investigated illegal detention sites in Cameroon, used oceanography to track a migrant boat adrift in NATO-surveilled waters, modelled a prison in Syria using victims’ memories of sound, and examined the causes and consequences of forest fires in Borneo and Sumatra. At its forefront is Eyal Weizman, a British Israeli architect.\r\rBorn in 1970 in Haifa, a city on Israel’s Mediterranean coast, Weizman studied at the Architectural Association in London before shifting his focus back to Israel. He had long been preoccupied with the country’s architecture and its complicity in the Israeli occupation, and in 2002 was invited with his colleague Rafi Segal to present the Israeli stand at the World Congress of Architecture in Berlin. They decided to exhibit models of Jewish settlements built in the occupied Palestinian territories. It was subsequently banned by the Israel Association of United Architects a month before the show, and as a response the pair published their material in a separate journal, with an exhibition in New York. It won Weizman international recognition and spoke of his projects to come: of his use of architecture as a means of investigation, and refusal to be silenced by those in a position of power.\r\rSince then, Forensic Architecture has used a range of pioneering techniques, from reading the ‘fingerprints’ of smoke clouds left behind by missile strikes, to autopsying the path of toxic, crop-killing herbicides using fluid dynamics. Their research is used mainly as evidence in court cases and tribunals, and is often commissioned by victims and human rights associations. It has also leaked into the public spheres of museums and art exhibitions, such as the documenta 14 in Kassel, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, and the Manifesta in Palermo. In 2018, there was a controversial nomination for the Turner Prize. While art critics debated about the boundaries between political activism and fine arts, Weizman’s statement about the nomination was ambivalent: ‘I’d rather lose prizes and win cases.’\r\rSuch forays into the art world undoubtedly bring another dimension to the group’s work: namely, what happens when art has real-world consequences. In 2019, their contribution to the Whitney Biennial in New York caught the attention of the press. Forensic Architecture had presented an 11-minute film on a tear gas canister known as a Triple-Chaser, manufactured by a company called the Safariland Group and used throughout the world. This same company was owned by Warren B. Kanders – who was also the vice chair of the Whitney board. After months of protests, which saw Forensic Architecture and seven other artists withdraw from the biennial, Kanders reluctantly resigned from the Whitney.\r\rLike the community satellites, Triple-Chaser and the countless other projects of Forensic Architecture have helped shed light on moments of violence and corruption. Architecture is used as a confluence of time, space, and context to gather evidence, painstakingly pieced together to provide fragments of truth. Whilst their work aims to correct injustices, it also helps victims process their loss and have it acknowledged on a public scale, forcing us to confront and address our systems’ failures and shortcomings.\r\r

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/8951/5850/products/zabriskie_monokultur_eyal_weizman_1-scaled.jpg?v=1679351402
fiddlers-green-gods-of-the-afternoon-7
Fiddler's Green - Gods of the Afternoon #7

\r
\r
\r
The seventh issue, also known as “Gods of the Afternoon,” published February 2020.
\r
Fiddler’s Green 7 features copper titling, a cover drawn by Benjamin A. In this issue, sinister rituals unfold during the longest nights of the year, spirits drift through the icy landscapes of the Arctic, and churches are never safe havens.\r\rGather around the fire. Let’s gaze at the shadows lurking beyond the Christmas lights.\r\rFeaturing words by Katy Soar, Jackie Bates, John Callow, Verity Holloway, John Reppion, Shane McCorristine, Roger Clarke, and Elizabeth Dearnley. Artwork by Blood and Dust, Eli John, and Nathaniel Winter-Hébert.\r\r
\r

\r

This time it’s KRZAK PAPIER 02 AND WE'RE GROUNDED, trying to understand what it means emotionally, ecologically and politically. What relationships with the ground below our feet do we have and on what grounds do we choose where to be grounded? Are we entitled to what the earth separates from us or do we need to keep in the ground? Why some are said to have more rights to specific grounds than others?\r\rFrom stories of soil, land and gravity, through learning how to be solid as a rock and rooted as a tree to experiences of being grounded forcefully as a response to one’s exercises of territorial belonging, we’re examining both the stability and the tremble of the grounds we stand on.\r\rCONTRIBUTORS*\rAda Augustyniak, Pamela Bożek, Alexander Cabeza Trigg, Eliza Chojnacka, Filippo Maria Ciriani, Armando de Cosmos, Zuzia Derlacz, Ekstasis, Alex Fisher, Marek Głogowski, Krysia Jędrzejewska-Szmek, Nata Kasprzycka, Zuzanna Kofta, Ola Korbańska, Wiktor Kotowski, Gustaw Maj, Piotr Marzec, Billy Morgan, Anna Moschioni, Adam Przywara, Taya Reshetnik, Olga Roszkowska, Anna Rutkowska, Kuba Szafrański, Gabriela Szałańska, Stach Szumski, Mauro Tosarelli, Elizar Veerman, Dominik Wojciechowski, Wspólnota Międzygatunkowa / Interspecies Community, Zuzia Łuczak, Sara Wojciechowska, Anna Szlezinger, Jack Sapoch, Laura Motta Bellan, Canelle Kraft, Angélica Sánchez, Maria Strzelecka\r\rEDITORS*\rZuzia Derlacz, Marta Królak, Olga Roszkowska, Pola Salicka\r\rSUPPORTING EDITOR*\rJosh Plough\r\rDESIGN*\rMarcin Liminowicz, Pola Salicka, Zuzia Derlacz\r\rPROOFREADING*\rJosh Plough, Hattie Wade\r\rTRANSLATIONS*\rAdam Chabiera, Łukasz Mojsak\r\rKRZAK SUPPORT*\rMatylda Dobrowolska\r\r \r\r
It’s now widely accepted among folks in the field that psychedelics will be legal in the next decade. So now, the question becomes: what will that look like? In our fourth issue, we speak to the leading psychedelic drug development companies in an attempt to answer this question. We also highlight indigenous voices with an homage to Amazonian artist Pablo Amaringo and a feature on the Huichols, a native group to Mexico, that’s fighting to preserve the land where they’ve been collecting peyote for generations. Find all this, plus practical advice like how to come out to friends and family as a psychedelic user, and much more.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0569/8951/5850/products/Zabriskie_doubleblind-magazine_issue-4.jpg?v=1679353070
