festa-campestre
Festa Campestre - Foghíles through the passage of seasons (english & italian)

We celebrate the seasons of Foghíles by gathering around the fire and telling our stories. This publication is the contribution of the people who, over the years, have sat in a circle, exchanged ideas, debated, created, undone and recreated. It is a container of memories and reflections, of moments of transition and thought, the way we continue to nourish our imagination and daily practice. There are over 20 of us here, but the people who have orbited around the project have been many more over the years.

By reading these pages, you will discover how Foghíles has rooted itself in the territory of Meilogu, particularly in Semèstene, what it has done over the years and what it hopes to continue doing in the future. The contributions are all written in two languages: the main language of the author and its respective translation in Italian or English. You will find stories, journals, snapshots, reflections, sounds. Some are written in the first person, more intimate and personal contributions, others in the form of essays; some accompanied by sketches, others by photos taken over the years. Each person had the freedom to choose the form of expression that felt most their own, in order to put together a panorama that could best tell the story of the project.

The book unfolds through the passage of seasons: it begins with the Autumn Equinox, where we introduce the physical and social context in which Foghíles was born and still exists. Then follows the Winter Solstice, marking the transition to the theme of memory: the story of official meetings and more informal events, from the lighting of the oven to the planting of garlic, fava beans, chickpeas. The Spring Equinox celebrates, through different lenses, the people, objects, and places, and then leads us to the Summer Solstice—the landscape of the future: the expression of values, desires, and imaginations in both the short and long term. This book is the story of the project, but it is also an invitation to those who want to start being part of it, to launch new collaborations or simply share similar values.

If you ever find yourself on the Strada Statale 131, at kilometre 168, you can turn off toward Semèstene. Let your gaze rest on the valley and in 5 minutes you’ll reach the village. Ask for Foghíles. If you don’t find us in the courtyard, we’re out in the countryside, organising or celebrating the next Festa Campestre. Join us, your presence will always be welcome.

Since its inception in the summer of 2018, Foghíles has been a project that follows the seasonal rhythms of Seméstene, one of the smallest inland villages in Sardinia. In Logudorese Sardinian, Foghíles means “hearths”: in the past, and still today, gatherings around the fire represent moments of knowledge transmission and direct learning through storytelling and shared experience. The project aims to propose a new narrative of rurality by restoring relationships with the lands received as a gift, strengthening roots and shaping new wings—an intimate yet open practice intended to help us become good ancestors for the future. By hosting gatherings that celebrate the circularity of time, seasonal transitions, and the various forms of sensitive life, Foghíles reinterprets and interacts with vernacular knowledge, wild trees, dry-stone structures, and bodies of water. According to the agricultural calendar, the Foghíles year ends/begins in September (su Cabidanni), during the week of the autumn equinox. Foghíles is a self-funded project, cared for daily by the Ni Sotgiu Family, together with a transgenerational collective composed of practitioners from various disciplines, intercultural guests, and local communities. Together, they move within an internal geography of homes, storage rooms, courtyards, workshops, and fields.

bilingual English & Italian
sewn thread binding / black and gold risograph printing technique
paper Munken Print White 90g & 150g
cover Fedrigoni Materica Kraft 250g
editor & printer Oreri—Iniziativa Editoriale
