It critiques conventional recordkeeping methods, which often perpetuate resource-intensive and preservationist paradigms, and introduces the concept of ‘green archiving’—a proposition to integrate sustainable technologies, practices, and philosophies into the curation, preservation, and dissemination of information. It draws on speculative theory, eco-criticism, software studies, decolonial and feminist studies to propose pathways for the future of archiving in the face of climate crisis. Through case studies, critical essays, interviews, and speculative designs, Green Archiving fosters a dialogue that balances memory and preservation with ecological stewardship for future generations.

Green Archiving will be included in the ‘Making Public’ series that investigates ‘the public’, the civil domain where space, knowledge, values and commodities are shared.

Contributors: Chia Amisola, Kristina Andersen, Chiara Borgonovo, Brian Castriota, Ofri Cnaani, Annet Dekker, Judith van der Elst, Flaminia Fortunato, Sarah Friend, Kristoffer Gansing, Linda Hilfling Ritasdatter, Kei Kreutler, Adi Kuntsman, Aymeric Mansoux, Hélia Marçal, Ekaterina Maslova, Nany Mauro-Flude, Servanne Monjour, Setareh Noorani, George Oates, Marloes de Valk, Frouke Wiarda
