K. Verlag

K. Verlag is a Berlin-based publishing atelier advancing new forms of the book-as-exhibition. We collaborate internationally with artists, writers, and institutions to develop carefully selected, bespoke publications by applying a curatorial-editorial approach. The book-as-exhibition pushes the boundaries of the traditional exhibition catalog; whereas the latter accompanies a project as a secondary compendium, K.’s publications are singular, stand-alone works realized through and within the microarchitecture of the book. Starting from this concept, we prepare each project meticulously in order to relay content and form through precise editing and unique design.

This practice of book-making engenders provocative encounters with art, science, design, politics, and ecology. Previous projects by K. have engaged themes of naturecultures, post/colonialism and ethnography, geopolitics and environmental violence, as well as visual culture, literature, dance, and feminism. Historical archives, libraries, and museums are assayed via intersectional approaches and experimental methodologies to explore important issues of our times.

To date, K. Verlag has supported and released around 35 publications. In 2019 Dora García’s On Reconciliation / Über Versöhnung was named one of the 25 most beautiful books by the German Stiftung Buchkunst while The Work of Wind: Land (co-published with The Blackwood Gallery) won the Award of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries in Canada. In 2021, we celebrate our 10th anniversary and launch a new series—Processing Process—after our first, the intercalations: paginated exhibition series, co-published with the Haus der Kulturen der Welt as part of Das Anthropozän-Projekt, has come to a close with the release of its final two volumes.

In May 2020, K. Verlag was named a recipient of the prestigious Deutscher Verlagspreis (German Publishing Prize), which is awarded annually to honor outstanding independent publishers by the Federal Ministry of Culture. Most recently, K. also received a special award on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Konrad-Wolff-Stiftung for independent publishing.

K. Verlag was initially co-founded in 2011 by Anna-Sophie Springer and Charles Stankievech. Since 2015, Anna-Sophie has been the sole operator, director, and manager of K. Verlag from her studio in Berlin-Lichtenberg.
