Anita Lane. Nick Cave. Susan Sontag. Karl Marx. Nan Goldin. This is a small selection of the unnumerable people who came from afar and chose Berlin as their new home. Some for a short period of time, some for a longer one and some for the rest of their life.
Not only in the no man’s land of the ninetenseventies, still scarred by the second world war and the separating wall, restless souls like Iggy Pop were attracted magnetically by Berlin. Since the city’s rapid growth in the course of industrialisation in the second half of 19th century – from a more or less provincial town to a megacity – misfits, revolutionaries, artists and avant-gardists who were outcasts elsewhere settled here. In his book „City of Exiles – Berlin from the outside in“, Stuart Braun tells the story of the mutual exchange and enrichment between these free spirits and the city that was built upon sand.
This Thursday, September 08, author Stuart Braun will read from his book in our shop. The reading starts at 7pm, entrance is free. The reading will be in english.

A Sydney-born writer, journalist and historian, Stuart Braun relocated to Berlin in 2009 and has written widely on the city for international publications including The Guardian, Al Jazeera and Deutsche Welle. He is currently working on a novel set in Berlin.

Das ist eine kleine Auswahl der unzähligen Menschen, die aus der Ferne kamen und Berlin zu ihrer neuen Heimat erkoren – manche für eine kürzere, manche für eine längere Zeit oder für den Rest ihres Lebens.
Nicht nur im durch den zweiten Weltkrieg und den Mauerstreifen vernarbten Niemandsland der 70er Jahre wurden ruhelose Naturen wie Iggy Pop magnetisch von Berlin angezogen. Seit die Stadt im Zuge der Industrialisierung in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu einer Millionenstadt angewachsen war, ließen sich Außenseiter, Revolutionäre, Künstler und Avantgardisten, die woanders verstoßen wurden, hier nieder. In seinem im vergangenen Jahr auf Englisch erschienenen Buch „City of Exiles – Berlin from the outside in“ erzählt Stuart Braun die Geschichte des wechselseitigen Austausches und Befruchtens zwischen diesen Freigeistern und der im märkischen Sand gebauten Stadt.
Stuart Braun liest diesen Donnerstag, den 8. September, bei uns aus diesem Buch. Die Lesung beginnt um 19 Uhr, der Eintritt ist frei. Die Lesung ist auf Englisch.
