Into the Woods - Annäherung an das Ökosystem Wald / Perspectives on the forest ecosystem

Der Zustand der Wälder weltweit ist ein alarmierendes Zeichen für das Ungleichgewicht, das zwischen Baumbestand und Kohlendioxidproduktion durch den Menschen herrscht. Abholzung und profitorientierte Ausbeutung der Wälder treibt die ökologische Krise auf unserem Planeten voran, gleichzeitig befeuert die Klimaerwärmung den Waldverlust. Die Publikation Into the Woods, die die gleichnamige Ausstellung begleitet, widmet sich dem Lebensraum Wald, seinen ökologischen Prozessen sowie den Bedrohungen, denen er ausgesetzt ist. Werke von neunzehn zeitgenössischen Künster:innen befassen sich mit dem menschlichen Einfluss auf den Zustand der Wälder und deren Zerstörung, aber auch mit dem kollektiven und symbiotischen Leben innerhalb des Waldökosystems.

The state of the world’s forests has become an alarming indicator of the imbalances that exist between the planet’s tree population and humanity’s production of carbon dioxide. Logging and the profit-oriented exploitation of woodlands are accelerating the ecological crisis, while climate change fuels deforestation. The publication Into the Woods, which accompanies the exhibition of the same name, focuses on the forest as a habitat, its ecological processes, and the threats it faces. Works by eighteen contemporary artists examine how humans influence the condition of forests and cause their destruction, while at the same time exploring the collective and symbiotic nature of the forest ecosystem. With works by Rodrigo Arteaga, Anca Benera & Arnold Estefán, Eline Benjaminsen, Alma Heikkilä, Monica Ursina Jäger, Markus Jeschaunig, Isa Klee, Susanne Kriemann, Jeewi Lee, Antje Majewski, Richard Mosse, Katie Paterson, Oliver Ressler, Abel Rodríguez, Diana Scherer, Rasa Šmite & Raitis Šmits. The publication appears in conjunction with the Klima Biennale Wien 2024, 5 April – 14 July 2024
