WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
This text was put together in under a week by Cassie Thornton with all of her friends. The reason it only took a week is that the ideas in the project have been simmering, through conversation and shared experience for what seems like 250 years. This publication is a part of an exhibition at Dream Farm Commons, which was founded by Ann Schnake. Ann’s supportive vision and creative generosity foregrounded this project, and this magazine. Her faith and love took it from idea to something we can touch.
"I’m not just waiting for the war to end. I’m waiting to wake up one day without having to brace myself for bad news. I’m waiting for a version of myself that doesn’t tremble at loud noises. I’m waiting to visit you without the journey being a miracle. I’m waiting for an ordinary day, one so ordinary that I get bored with it." - Ghadir Aldasht, Lawyer + Mom, Nuseirat Camp, Gaza
"I’m waiting for a social movement that doesn’t leave anyone out. I’m waiting for a moment when I know what to do. I am waiting for an emergency wherever I go. I am waiting to react to that emergency. I am waiting for a way to help. I am waiting for people who I can wait with. I am waiting for the moment when money and time as we know it no longer matter. I am waiting for the little crack in the cement that let’s us squeeze through into a new form of life. I am waiting for leadership from below. I am waiting for a glitch that reveals that we have been working on the revolution this whole time. I am waiting for us to realize that we do have enough if we share everything. I am waiting for my body to catch up with that. I am waiting for someone to tell me what to do. I am waiting before I tell you what to do. I am waiting for my intuition to be louder than distraction. I am waiting for a situation I can trust, but not for its familiarity, instead for its wisdom in fluidity. I am waiting for the cute person to text me. I am waiting for the feeling that sometimes happens when you are dancing with a group people and you all sync up and you suddenly just know what to do. I am waiting for the feeling when you are speaking with someone you love and you don’t want it to end because it feels like you are making an entire world. I am waiting for a very hot summer. I am waiting for time to extend so that more people who are too busy can slow down and think, and feel. I am waiting for a way to meet Ghadir out of Gaza, where she will be safe. I am waiting to see if I can get a job or if I am unemployable. I am waiting for a group of friends who produce very effective vandalism at night. What are you waiting for? How will you know when you are done waiting? What would be the most beautiful outcome of this waiting period?"
